Project Title:
Investigating the Geriatric Oral Health Triad in Long Term Care
Principal Applicant
Shauna Hachey, RDH, MHS from Dalhousie University
This study explores current oral health practices in long-term care (LTC) and the
integration of a dental hygienist into a LTC team. Best practices in geriatric oral care
include an interprofessional approach that involves frontline care providers and dental
hygienists in the delivery and promotion of the geriatric oral health triad. The health and
well-being of aging adults in LTC can be improved by providing onsite access to regular
oral assessments, regular oral hygiene care, and dental treatments (including facilitating
access to essential offsite oral health services). The proposed research has the potential to
inform decision making and LTC oral health care reform.

Project Title:
Economic Evaluation of a Comprehensive Dental Care Program
Principal Applicant
Abdulrahman Ghoneim, BDS, MSc, RDH, FRCD(C) from the University of Toronto
While costing studies are useful in estimating the projected costs of establishing a dental
care program, they fail to judge the cost-effectiveness of such programs. In order to
advance our understanding of universal coverage of dental care in Canada, high-quality
evidence that accurately estimates the costs and benefits yielded by investing in a
comprehensive dental care program must be provided. This project studies value for
money as measured by cost-effectiveness, cost-utility, and the return on investment of
providing a comprehensive dental care program to individuals facing financial barriers to
dental care.
